CalArts Soundstream 2019
CalArts Soundstream 2019
CalArts Soundstream 2019 is a one-night showcase of unique forward-thinking, genre-defying music—all original work by artists graduating from The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts. From CalArts’ graduating class of 2018 comes an eclectic selection of bands delving into the diverse styles of jazz, folk, rock, R&B, soul, pop and electronic music. This lineup represents what’s next for LA’s music scene, as these creative performers move into their professional songwriting and performance careers.
Shandy & Eva
Original music combining Polish and Caribbean Flavors
Acoustic trio: two voices, guitars, and percussion. We perform mostly our original music crossing many genres from country/blues through jazz to pop. Last summer we released our first music video "Sunrise"; now we are working on an album which will come out in few months!
Band Members: Ewa Zmijewska, voice, acoustic guitar; Shandrelica Casper, voice, percussion; Benjamin Thomas, electric guitar; Marcelo Bucater, percussion
Dolly Dirtbag
A weirdo bubblegum pop songstress with DIY electronics
Dolly Dirtbag is an LA-based experimental pop songwriter and producer. Her songs range from dreamy pop ballads to experimental sound poems to club-oriented dance music, all with electronic production and a focus on layered and altered vocals.
Band Members: Olivia Hauser, laptop, keyboard MIDI controller, custom glove MIDI controller, vocal effects pedal/looper
Gillian Rae Perry
Gillian Rae Perry explores interactions between text and music, audible and inaudible
Gillian Rae Perry grew up studying music, theatre, and dance. During her undergraduate career, she also studied film, and is greatly influenced by art forms outside of music. Perry studied abroad in Paris with the EAMA-Nadia Boulanger Institute in the summers of 2016 and 2018. Her time in Paris reinforced her belief that intentionality is one of the most important aspects of composition. An avid poetry reader and writer, Perry is also influenced by text and how text can interact with music in both spoken and non-spoken ways.
Band Members: Gillian Rae Perry, voice, ukulele, piano
Love Underwater
An eccentric antifolk collective making, well, waves.
What do you get when you put a harp in a rock band? In short, Love Underwater, a project originally started in New Brunswick, NJ, eccentrically mixing folk and punk for your listening pleasure. The project started its journey in 2015 and found success playing shows in northern New Jersey and New York City. Having built their own sound and style, Love Underwater is able to harness their influences—such as Bayside, Frank Turner, and Deborah Henson-Conant—while still maintaining their individuality, a feat not so challenging once you include a harp. Their latest recorded work, an EP entitled “Crosswick”, is the perfect tease to leave you wanting more. Now relocated to Los Angeles, Love Underwater brings their east coast stylings to a new area.
Band Members: Leila Jay, electric harp+FX and vocals; MJ LaVine, electric bass and vocals; Ian Stahl, electric guitar+FX and vocals; Jason Fragoso, drum kit; Pablo Leñero, keyboard
Laugh Queens
Magnetic, alt-rock fever
Laugh Queens is the alternative rock project of SF-based songwriter Stephanie D’Arcy. Since moving to LA in 2016, D’Arcy has performed many shows with her band in which she plays lead guitar and sings. She recently released her debut album, “Bathcolors”, a sonic collection of thoughtfully crafted confessions. In each track, she reveals her ever-changing sense of self while creating an unexpected relationship between snarky rock ’n’ roll fever and intimate balladry. Influenced by artists like Björk, Radiohead, and The Kills, Laugh Queens breed multi-layered melodies fused with a bluesy flair.
Band Members: Stephanie D’Arcy, guitar and vocals; Scarlett Perry, bass and vocals, Yaryn Choi, synth and vocals; Jason Fragoso, drums
Future Lover
Driving, darkwave-inspired dance tracks entwined with cloudy, reverb-soaked vocals
Born out of a shared love of darkwave and industrial dance music and a desire to perform live using hardware, Future Lover is the duo of Daniel Crook and Scarlett Perry. They use only hardware to produce a floor of sound; Crook creates intense beats using a drum machine, sequencer and haunting synth lines, while Scarlett Perry delivers somber vocals, grounding synth, and melodic and rhythmic guitar. They value the spontaneity that hardware brings to a live performance by lending itself to the possibilities of improvisation, allowing each performance to be unique.
Band Members: Scarlett Perry, vox, guitar, synth; Daniel Crook, drum machine, sequencer, synths
Sabina Arias
Mexican folkloric with an electronic touch
Sabina’s solo project featuring Mexican folkloric rhythms with modern harmonies, looping station and dynamic drums.
Band Members: Sabina vox/guitar/requinto/laptop (Ableton); Matt Smith, drums
Off The Cuff
An eclectic folk fusion band that captures the rhythms of the heart.
Off the Cuff is a 5-piece band that brings together a variety of musical cultures in the creation of an original eclectic folk sound. The songs are written and composed by Chloe Levillant and Atticus Mckittrick and were arranged collaboratively as a group. As musicians and composers we come from a variety of cultural and musical backgrounds ranging from jazz to classical, folk and world music, enabling us to create a sound that is original and unique. Our distinct musical voices and personalities are present in our performance and were brought together at California Institute of the Arts. Our music combines driving rhythms that will make you want to dance, folk melodies that will capture the sensitivity of your hearts and poetry that will have you clutching the edge of your seat.
