CalArts Soundstream 2017
CalArts Soundstream 2017
CalArts Soundstream 2017 is a one-night showcase of forward-thinking, genre-defying music—all original work by artists graduating from The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts. From CalArts’ graduating class of 2017 comes an eclectic selection of bands; delving into the diverse worlds of jazz, folk, rock, R&B, soul, and pop. This lineup represents what’s next for LA’s music scene, as these creative performers blend detailed composition with improvisation and modern electronics with acoustic instruments. Featuring (not in performance order):
Ackland, Battery, Grace Fellows, Newman, Primero Sueno, Shirasawa-22 and Cilience.

LA Weekly on Soundstream 2015: One of the most anticipated events of the year for current students at talent-factory CalArts, the annual Soundstream showcase gives the college’s musicians a chance to play on one of the most famous stages in music at the Troubadour. Taking things outside the metaphorical music box, performers bring the kind of outlandish originality that's synonymous with “art school,” introducing the audience to “future R&B” and other equally innovative genres. Whether you’re looking for some new fresh faces in the live music scene, or you just want to know what the heck “psychedelic children's rock” sounds like, Soundstream is the place to be.

Ackland
Experimental art rock
With an ethereal, dark and dreamy sound, ACKLAND tells human stories, giving audience members the opportunity to experience personal catharsis. The band blends acoustic instruments, haunting vocals and live electronic effects. ACKLAND has played shows at The Hotel Cafe, California Institute of the Arts and The Battery Books & Music. Led by vocalist and songwriter Molly Pease, the ensemble includes Nigel Deane on violin, Caleb Veazey on guitar, Ben Levinson on bass and Nick Hon on drums.
Bashful Creature
Bashful Creature
Bashful Creature intertwines introspective lyricism with colorful textures and harmony. Combining classic songwriting and an innovative accompaniment style, the group is able to cast a sonic shadow larger than their small size would lead one to believe. Nailah Middleton (harp/voice) and Alex Hamberger (bass) serve as the primary songwriters for Bashful Creature. The material that comprises their forthcoming debut album (due out summer 2016) tackles the themes of unrequited love and understated commitment. With equal measures of jazz, synth pop, and folk-inspired melodies, Bashful Creature presents an unforgettable sound and live show. Instagram: @bashfulcreaturemusic
Ben & Kat
Ben & Kat
Following a recent recording of their haunting adaptation of Samuel Barber’s Sure on this Shining Night at Capitol Records, Los Angeles soprano Kathryn Shuman and bassist Ben Finley share their latest explorations into an array of electronic, acoustic, improvised and movingly creative music.
Yvette Cornelia
Yvette Cornelia
Yvette Cornelia makes music for day-dreaming and allowing your thoughts to wander. Her nine-person ensemble features female vocal harmonies, folky strings, and clarinet against traditional jazz or rock instrumentation. An emphasis on pulse and modal patterns is countered by a large degree of improvisatory expression and catchy melodies. This band began playing as part of a surrealist storytelling show, and in that spirit, the lyrical themes explore the mysteries of our nature. yvettecornelia.bandcamp.com Yvette Holzwarth, Kathryn Shuman, Elsa Lund, Rachel Iba, Patrick Behnke, Daniel Gonzalez, Ben Finley, Caleb Veazey, Nick Hon
Gardenbird Thunderclub
Gardenbird Thunderclub emerged from the duo of Kathryn Shuman and Chuck Gloria, both from southern California. Meeting at CalArts in the fall of 2014, they have since developed a unique blend of experimental alternative folk. Using improvisation as a creative means, they are currently developing an EP and are expanding their instrumentation.
Justin Jackson
Justin Jackson
At 22 years old, Justin Jackson is one of the younger RnB/Soul artists emerging in the greater Los Angeles area. His music has been dubbed potent and electric, while his style fuses the line between vulnerable and brave as his vocal melodies beautifully cascade over his soulful yet jazzy chords.
Abby Lyons
Abby Lyons
Abby Lyons is a singer-songwriter from Chicago who writes songs in a folk/pop style. Her music creates a world of positivity, honesty, and cleverness combined with catchy melodies and imaginative orchestrations. Her uplifting and whimsical songs leave listeners with renewed clarity and optimism. The band features Abby Lyons (piano/vocals), JP Yépez (guitar), Giancarlo Aruz (bass), Michael Ohlinger (drums), Rachel Iba (violin), Henry Webster (violin/viola), Luigi Polcari (cello), and Zach Onett (small piano-like instruments).
Maryama Band
Maryama Band

Chosen as Girl Trip and MUZIC magazine’s artist of the month, Maryama Band currently features Julian Karahalios (bass), Marcelo Bucater (drums), Michael Ohlinger (world percussion) Maleke Clemmons (piano), Abby Lyons and Elsa Lund (backing vocals) and Mirbagheri herself (guitar, voice and sehtar). Wistappear
Wistappear is a southern-Californian indie rock project which sprouted from the off-kilter autobiographical songs of Ian Lipson. Lipson urgently mined for direction and self-understanding through song, while back at his childhood home, living the classic millennial tale after two years of recklessness and musical adventure in Los Angeles. Carrying a disorienting duality of youthfulness and nostalgia, Lipson’s solo works evolved into full band orchestrations as he found himself back in Los Angeles studying music at CalArts, and working with friends old and new, to finish a 5-song Wistappear EP titled Ride It Out, and record two standalone singles ("Midnight Preacher," "Every Side"). Wistappear recorded the singles at Universal Rondor Studios in Santa Monica and then went on to work with producer/engineer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Toro y Moi, Kishi Bashi) who mixed the singles and then co-produced/engineered/mixed the upcoming album, Knack For Whatever. Along with drummer Evan Jiroudek (with whom Lipson has incubated Wistappear material for the past 3 years, since meeting at CalArts), Lipson journeyed to creative oasis Athens, GA, to work on the record with Vandenberg and explore the vibrant local musical community there. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Lipson and Jiroudek regrouped with guitarist Dylan Rodrigue and long-time collaborator and bassist Marcus Högsta, with whom they continue to develop new material and bring new life to the album material in performances throughout Los Angeles. Wistappear plans to release Knack For Whatever later this year.
