The Thermals - (Set time: 10:30 PM)
A Portland-based supergroup of sorts, the Thermals originally featured Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett, the Operacycle's Jordan Hudson, and Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster of the twee/folk-pop duo Hutch and Kathy and the All Girl Summer Fun Band. The group formed in early 2002 as a way for its members to play just for the fun of it, but their insistent melodies and punk-inspired urgency quickly won them a local following. Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard became one of the Thermals' first fans and got the group in touch with Sub Pop, which signed them within four months of the band's formation. The Thermals then released a single in January of 2003, followed by their full-length More Parts Per Million later that spring.
Thao with The Get Down Stay Down - (Set time: 9:15 PM)
Thao with The Get Down Stay Down is a San Francisco, California-based (formerly Falls Church, Virginia) alternative folk rock music group. It consists of Thao Nguyen (vocals, guitar), Adam Thompson (bass guitar), and Willis Thompson (drums). Frank Stewart (lead guitar, production) is a former member of the band.
Slang Chickens - (Set time: 8:30 PM)
Formed in Spring of 08, Slang Chickens have rapidly become one of the more endearing and enticing young bands to come out of Los Angeles in a long while. In just one years time, they have traveled on both the West and East coasts, sharing the stage with contemporaries such as Jay Reatard, Sleepy Sun, Crystal Antlers, the Strange Boys, The Night Marchers, and Joe Lally (of Fugazi)
The Chickens (as their friends call them) take influence from bands as diverse and contradictory as The Gun Club, X, Devo, Neil Young, Everly Brothers, Mississippi John Hurt, Flying Burrito Bros., and Pavement. Slang Chickens have assertively created a jubilant fornication of these artists who brought them together. But more than this, they have synthesized a unique sound utilizing electric and acoustic guitars, banjos, and lapsteel, that is as equally familiar and home-style comfortable as it is fresh. They have proven to be a wonderful contradiction. Their full-length debut was recorded at various houses and studios in Los Angeles and will be released by the budding Psychedelic Judaism label by August 2009
