FYOHNA
FYOHNA—the duo of Katarina Gleicher and producer Elliot Glasser, deliver an oft-crooned narrative theme with a new, acute sensitivity towards not just the aching that accompanies it, but the strength found in its speaker’s direct insistence. To sing about being wronged is one thing, but to speak the truth with such emotional presence, grace, and clarity is another that one doesn’t find so often. It is this bareness as it is met with a sort of triumphant musical buoyancy that makes FYOHNA’s sound so special.

What exactly is that sound? Think of it as a novel blend of warm synths à la James Blake and sequenced drums that pull from the expansiveness of trap, the complexity of west african rhythms, and the moods of trip hop equally. Songs are reminiscent of the more reflective singer-songwriters of the past decade—think of Feist, St. Vincent, and Cat Power. Atmospheres range from the catchy sweetness found in “Believe You” and “Ghost Heart” to the mellow brooding that carries the songs “Misjudged” and “Loved Fiercely”.

This blend is no mistake however. FYOHNA have developed a method of working and performing together since their inception in the Spring of 2015 that maintains a mind towards absolute collaboration. Founded on the close relationship between its two members, FYOHNA are able to blur the sometimes rigid roles of songwriter, instrumentalist, performer, and producer, each member an equal and flexible part throughout the creation and delivery of a song. Their live performances engage with spontaneous voice-sampling, beat-sequencing, and loop-triggering by each member as they adapt their constructed songs to the stage. FYOHNA often begins with a single idea, a musical pattern or phrase, which is soon developed, built upon, and arranged into a full piece of music.
